  • ( ) Verizon adds HP Mini 311, Mini 110 to 3G lineup

It looks like Verizon is getting ready to add a few new HP mini-laptops to its line of subsidized, 3G-enabled notebooks. First up is the HP Mini 110 which features a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and 160GB hard drive. It runs Windows XP Home and it'll sell for $200 after rebate when you sign up for a 2-year service contract. Of course, you could get a similar laptop from HP for about $300, but this model does come with a 3G modem thrown in for good measure.

The more exciting news is that Verizon will also be offering the HP Mini 311, which is an 11.6 inch laptop with NVIDIA ION graphics. It has a 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and runs Windows 7 Home Premium. After a mail-in rebate you'll be able to pick up the HP Mini 311 for $250, which is a bit less than the $399 you'll end up paying for the same laptop from HP. More>>

  • ( ) RM42,320 for a laptop

In reply, Mara said the equipment were purchased in a lump sump and there was no price breakdown for the laptops.

The price breakdown was only done after the equipment was supplied for the purpose assets record and it could not be used as a basis for reference.

Nevertheless, Mara has created a task force and is conducting a price adjustment for all the equipment, it said.

The report also stated that the college had paid between RM1,398 and RM2,945 for 204 teaching manuals.

Checks found that the teaching manuals supplied were bound using comb binding. The teaching manuals obtained at a cost of RM358,476 is a waste because they were never used, it said, adding that the supplier has been notified to provide the original version of the teaching manual in hard cover. • ( ) Souped up HP Mini 311 options coming soon

The HP Mini 311 is already a pretty full featured machine as far as low power mini-laptops go. It has a high resolution 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, NVIDIA ION LE graphics, and gets close to 6 hours of battery life. But it looks like things are about to get even better.

Right now, the laptop ships with 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and NVIDIA ION LE which doesn't support DirectX 10. But the folks at MyHPMini discovered a few interesting things in the computer's service manual.

Basically, the HP Mini 311 will soon be available with Windows 7, and while some computer makers are restricting their mini-laptops to run only Windows 7 Starter, the HP Mini 311 will be available with a choice of Windows 7 Starter, Basic, Premium, and Professional. Or at least it will support all of those options, it remains to be seen whether HP will offer all four options to customers. More>>
